Shimano Deore XT FC-M8100 2; an entirely new construction

With 1x drivetrains are becoming ever popular in the mountain bike world, Shimano is back at it again with a double ring set-up reminding us of all the perks of a 2x drivetrain.

A 2x drivetrain utilizes closer steps between gears. This feature allows you to find your perfect cadence while spinning up climbs, much easier. There’s no need to sacrifice low-end gearing when you can have both.

The tried and true Hollowtech 2 construction now uses direct mount chainrings, a special gear tooth profile for improved chain retention and a narrower 172mm Q-factor, giving you more comfort in the saddle.

Using the Hollowtech 2 technology, proprietary to Shimano, the crank arms are trusted to have superb balancing stiffness, strength, and weight, resulting in ultimate power transfer. Shimano’s Hollowtech uses cold-forging to engineer hollow crank arms that are surprisingly light yet won’t flex under pressure.

The new direct-mount chainring application allows you to easily swap chainrings without the extra work of removing your crank. Equipped with a 36/26t chainset and the same crank arms as the single-ring setup, you can easily switch over to a 1x by swapping chainrings and removing your front derailleur.
